What to bring on a Moyenne Island tour

Every listing says towel and sunscreen. Almost none of them mention the national park fee in cash, that the island has no shop at all, or that the Seychelles are granite islands and the entries are not sandy. Here is the honest list.

Cash for the park fee, high-factor sunscreen, a hat and reef shoes. Those four cover the four things people most often wish they had brought. Masks are provided on the snorkelling trips; almost everything else is up to you, because there is nothing to buy on Moyenne Island.

Cash for the national park fee
It is paid on Moyenne Island itself, it is small, and card is not reliably accepted. This is the single most common surprise of the day.
Serious sunscreen
Four degrees south of the equator, on an open deck, with light coming off the water. Reapply more often than you think.
A hat you can secure
There is very little shade on most boats and the crossing is breezy.
Reef shoes
The Seychelles are granite islands. Several entries are rock or coral rubble rather than sand, and the jetty on Moyenne is not a beach.
A dry bag
Decks get wet, spray happens and phones do not enjoy either.
Insect repellent
Moyenne Island is sixteen thousand trees on nine and a half hectares. It is a forest, and forests have mosquitoes.

What you do not need

Three things people over-pack

Skip the gear, the packed lunch and anything you would mind losing.

Snorkelling gear. Masks and snorkels are provided on every snorkelling listing here. Bring your own only if you strongly prefer your own mask.

Lunch. Almost every full-day listing includes it, on a beach or on board. Check yours, and if it is included, a packed lunch is just a bag to carry.

Anything valuable. There is nowhere secure on a small boat, the deck is wet and you will be swimming. Leave it at the hotel.

Moyenne Island has no shop, no kiosk and no facilities. Whatever you need for the time ashore has to come off the boat with you.
